Follow Up: Medieval Times Dinner & Tournament

In my relenting quest to explore Los Angeles, I often venture out of my local neighborhood and into this vast city in search of new and exciting adventures. This time around I had the opportunity to escape the normal scene and taking a step back in time to the Middle Ages. It’s not often such an opportunity presents itself, so my friends and I took full advantage, as is evident in our Royal Family portrait taken at Medieval Times — a truly grand and spectacular event we all enjoyed and so will you!

Upon entering the life-sized castle we were greeted by medieval stewards and assigned to a team via color-coded crowns — we were on the red team and proud of it! There is a large inner courtyard where the over 1,000 guests mix and mingle awaiting their supper and tournament. While inside, we enjoyed adult beverages and strolled through the castle shops and visited the horses.

At the beckoning call of a knight in shining armor, we were all summoned, given instructions, and shown to our designated sections: red crowns in the red section, blue crowns in the blue section, yellow crowns in the yellow section, and so forth. The enormous arena rivals any and resembles that of a Medieval Colosseum.  We sat anxiously waiting for the ‘Gladiator meets Beowulf’ showdown while the crowd settled.

Soon after, each team took their place, and the show began! Lights, sound, and smoke-filled the arena as each team cheered, laughed, and scoped out the competition. Trumpets blared as the King and Queen rode in to take their place and begin the opening ceremonies.

Each team was assigned a Knight according to their color and the entire arena filled with troops marching to a medieval beat.

Before the show, there was an equestrian demonstration with a beautiful white horse that came up right in front of us.

Then the moment we had all been waiting for had arrived! Tensions and spirits were high as each Knight challenged another in a jousting tournament. One by one they joust and one by one they fall, then a ground battle begins and each Knight chooses a weapon to fight with.

After the tournament and finishing our dessert, we cheered for our Knight one last time as we made our way out of the castle. We had a great time and I recommend the event highly. Medieval Times Dinner and Tournament is a family dinner theater featuring staged medieval-style games, sword-fighting, and jousting performed by a cast of 75 actors and 20 horses in a replica 11th-century castle.
